Cathedral St Jacob, Sibenik

May 15, 2016

St. James Cathedral in Sibenik is the highest architectural achievement on Croatian soil. It is a unique testimony of the transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance period in church architecture. Because of its exceptional value this monument is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage.
The cathedral was building more then 100 year, till 1536th. The three – Francesco di Giacomo, Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus and Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino – developed a structure built entirely from stone, using unique construction techniques.
The most beautiful part of the Cathedral ( at least to me .-) is the gallery of 71 heads carved on the outer rim of apse. It is work of Georgius Damaticus, the famous sculptor, engineer and architect who gave his artistic forte working on this masterpiece. With their exceptional beauty these stone heads still attract attention of passer-by not giving the answer to whom they were belong.
